8.0.3 Building a Locomotive Fleet

My primary desire in all aspects of my layout is to reproduce actual operating practices and equipment for 1955. In Modeling Interest 4 - Locomotives I discussed the type of locomotives I was interested in operating on the WWSL. I repeat part of the information here.

Prototype

Steam Locomotives. Steam locomotives of both geared and rod construction were used in railroading from its beginning to the mid to late 1950's in the Grays Harbor area.

  • Northern Pacific was using a W-3 class steam locomotive (NP 1752) in mixed train operations until that service ended in the early 1950's.
  • Northern Pacific also had several L-9s in switching service at Aberdeen and Hoquiam. I will be modeling No. 1045.
  • In 1913, the Schafer Brothers Logging Company (whose logging territory I alternate history appropriated) had a 45-ton Heisler geared locomotive. In 1929 they had two and three-truck Shays and 2-6-0 Prairie rod locomotives. Steam lasted until the company ceased operations in 1955.
  • The Clemons Logging Company and Saginaw Timber Company had a wide variety of steam locomotives, ranging from two and three truck Climax and Shay geared locomotives, to 2-6-0 Mogul to the 2-6-6-2 Mallet rod locomotives. They also had 2-6-2T and 2-8-2T side and saddle tank locomotives.

Diesels. The NP, MILW and UP introduced diesel locomotives to Gray's Harbor operations after WWII. Based on my interests and the time period, the following prototype diesel locomotives are of interest:

  • The Northern Pacific had NP 558 (an EMD GP-) located at Centralia for road service and NP 159, (an EMD SW1200) located at Hoquiam for switcher service.
  • The Milwaukee Road had (an EMD GP7) number and MILW 619 (an EMD SW1200) located at Hoquiam for switcher service.
  • The Union Pacific had UP 112 (an EMD GP7) located at Hoquiam for interchange service.
  • Rayonier had No. 201 (a Baldwin S12) on their operations a some point in the 50's.
  • The Schafer Brothers Logging Company had No.20 (an Alco S2) in October 1950.

Electric Locomotives.
  • When I was going to college in Chester Pa. in the early 1970's, I was enamored with the GG1's plying the NE Corridor between New York City and Washington DC. That led to an appreciation of other heavy electrified locomotives.
  • I have always enjoyed armchair railfanning the smaller electrified lines in the US (Piedmont and Northern (PN),  Butte Anaconda and Pacific (BAP), Pacific Electric (PE), Sacramento Northern (SN), and the Red River Lumber Company. I particularly like the PN and BAP boxcabs.

The WWSL

Steam locomotives.

  • I have decided to operate steam on on the OPLC in 1955. Locomotives will be a 2-8-0 Mikado in mainline service and and a 0-8-0 in yard service.
  • I have decided to model as a static display steam locomotives at the Cascade Pole and Y. Knott Lumber Company industrial spurs. I am thinking 0-4-0T and 0-6-0T saddle or side tank locomotives.

Diesel locomotives.

  • I have decided to dieselize the WWSL's Demaine Yard with an ALCo/GE/I-R Boxcab Diesel for yard service, and use a pair of EMD NW2's.for the Southern Division's main line operations (Montesano to Wickwood).
  • I have also decided to dieselize the STC with a pair of GE 44T diesels for yard service, and a Baldwin S12 for their main line operations (simulated).

Electric locomotives.

  • I have decided to electrify the WWSL's Northern Division's main line operations (Montesano to Coal Grove) with a pair of  B-B boxcab electrics such as those used by the Piedmont and Northern and the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific for road operations.
  • I have decided to electrify the WWSL's passenger operations on the Northern Division with a pair of electric powered coaches similar in design to the Pennsylvania Railroad MP54 or South Shore xxxxx.
