8.6.1 Northern Pacific Steam L9

Prototype Information

The Northern Pacific Steam L9 was a  0-6-0 switcher built by Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1906–1910. Notable features were: Valve Gear  - Stephenson, Cylinders were 20x26 (Diameter x Distance), Driver Diameter was 51 inches, Superheater.

The Northern  Pacific Railroad still used steam switchers in Grays Harbor (specifically in Hoquiam and Aberdeen) in September 1955. There were 5 L9 series switchers in service:

  • 1045 Oil burner L9 Hoquiam Switcher
  • 1053 Oil burner L9 Aberdeen
  • 1070 NOB Non-superheater Oil burner L9 Aberdeen Switcher 
  • 1126 NOB L9 Hoquiam Switcher
  • 1618 Oil burner W Hoquiam Freight (stored)

The WWSL

The WWSL is going to model the Hoquiam Switcher No. 1045.

Engineering Information

Class L9's had NP Tender Class 7c's. These tenders had a Water Capacity of 4,350 gallons and an
Oil Capacity of 7 xx.
