0.1.3 LDSIG Layout Design Process

The increased interest of layout design by experienced model railroad enthusiasts led to the creation of the Layout Design Special Interest Group (LDSIG). The LDSIG published quarterly newsletters (Layout Design News) that facilitated the exchange of information and ideas and develop improved ways hobbyists could learn the art and science of layout design. Numerous contributors debated topics of interest and between all of them they developed the idea of 1) design concept, 2) layout design and 3) track planning as the triad of creative railroad modeling.

A. Concept

1. Modeling Interest
a. The extent of railroad operations that the modeler wishes to replicate,
b. The traffic the modeler wishes to replicate,
c. The industries the modeler wishes to replicate,
d. The locomotives and rolling stock of interest to the modeler, and
e. The type of railroad personnel positions the modeler wants to simulate during layout operations.

2. Prototype Interest
a. Locale
b. Era
c. Type of Prototype / Class

B. Structure

1. Resources Available
a. Time / Energy
b. Skills/Experience
c. Money

2. Layout Planning
a. Scale
b. Size Shape
c. People Oriented Parameters
d. Layout Oriented Parameters
e. Scenery
f. Control
g. Layout Design and Analysis

C. Detail

1. Track Plan Design
a. Layout Design Elements
b. Vignettes.
c. Technical Specifications.
d. Station Maps

2. Construction
a. Room Preparation
b. Benchwork
c. Lighting
d. Human Factors
