9.0.1 Rolling Stock - Modeling Goals

When one thinks of a model railroad rolling stock immediately comes to mind.

The WWSL is set in the year 1956. The WWSL, the OPLC and the STC are fictitious lines, but I always turn to the prototype for equiment and operating practice. I rely heavily on the Great Northern, the Northern Pacific, the Milwaukee Road and the Union Pacific for guidance.

My Goals

  • Create a plausible fleet for the three Class 3 railroads modeled, reflecting the industrial setting chosen and timeline.
  • Identify the regional railroad and private owner cars that could be found in the operating interchange setting.
  • Acquire prototype driven, reasonably accurate cars,
  • Purchase prototype accurate cars for Class 1 railroads as available in the market place
  • Purchase plausible cars for freelanced Class 3 railroads as available in the marketplace
  • Kitbatch existing stocks of rolling stock to represent fleet requirements not available in the marketplace.
  • Establish modeling standards practices that ensure models perform well under layout conditions.

When i first started this endeavor, there were few prototype research assets available, and inevitably the generic cars available in the marketplace took precedence over prototype accurate cars. Now that the marketplace has matured, and prototype research assets are more readily available (books, photographic archives, magazines, historical societies, blogs, etc), a modeler who chooses prototype fidelity has a significant easier time finding answers to his/her myriad questions.

I have relied heavily over the years with the following sources

Historical Societies
