8.9.2 STC Baldwin DS-4-4-1000 No. 12

 Prototype Information

The Baldwin DS-4-4-1000 were two models of four-axle 1,000 horsepower (746 kW) diesel-electric switcher locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1946 and 1951. The first models (56 locomotives) were powered by an 8-cylinder normally aspirated prime mover, but from 1948, a change was made to the second model powered by a 6-cylinder turbocharged engine. These two models replaced the VO-1000 in Baldwin's catalogue, and were in turn replaced by the S-12 in 1951.

Baldwin also had a Baldwin DRS-4-4-1000 diesel-electric road switcher in the catalog.

Logging companies were known for purchasing used equipment. When it came to dieselization, they took what whas available on the market. Rayonier had two S12's: 201 & 202. Shaefer Logging Company had an Alco S2.

The WWSL

In the Saginaw Timber Company alternative history, the Company retired all the steam locomotives and purchased first generation diesel locomotives. Saginaw Timber was looking for a road switcher. They purchased a new Baldwin DS-4-4-1000. The sales guy was enthusiastic, whether honestly or not it didn't matter. (For want of an "R" ...... ). Baldwin got out of the locomotive business several years later. Fortunately for the STC, a refugee from the east had PRR maintenance experience on the Baldwin product line and everything got to normal quickly

The STC operates STC No. 12 as their branch line 'road' power.  No. 12 moves railroad cars from STC log reload sites to the American Pulp and Paper Company Chip mill and then to the APP chip yard.

Engineering

The DRS-4-4-1000 was (in most cases) visually indistinguishable from its 1,200 horsepower (890 kW) successor, the Baldwin RS-12.

Modeling Information

I fouund a Stewart Hobbies Baldwin DS-4-4 1000 at a local swap meet. It was undecorated and a digitrack decoder was included in the deal.

Project Process

Decoder: To be determined.

Paint Scheme: Rock Island Red with white visibility stripes on hoods and side sills.

Weathering: Assumption is the units were painted by the company after their arrival, and units are in a very well maintained shape. No need to turn the models into rust buckets.
