8.7.5 Diesel Locomotive (NW2)

Prototype Information

The EMD NW2 is a 1,000 hp (750 kW), B-B switcher locomotive manufactured by General Motors Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois. The NW2 was manufactured from February 1939 to December 1949, and 1145 were produced – 1121 for the U.S., and 24 were exported to Canada.

The NW2 was a continuation of the EMD SW line. The NW1 (the "N" in NW1 stands for the nine in nine hundred hp (670 kW), the "W" stands for welded frame) proceded the NW2.The NW's2 and the SW7had similar profiles. Distinguishing features of the NW2 include two stacks in the middle of the hood, a half-height radiator grille, no sand box on the front platform, and no small louvers at the top front corners of the sides of the hood.

In additional to the single engine unit, EMD marketed the NW2 in pair and triplet configurations (TR).   3 TR cow-calf paired sets, 36 TR2 cow-calf paired sets, and 2 TR3 cow-calf-calf sets were produced. The TR sets were built prior to World War II and the TR2 and TR3 sets were built postwar.

The WWSL

The WWSl was interested in getting a diesel road switcherfor their new Southern Division, and they heard great things about EMD locomotives. There was a problem however. At the time of their interest EMD was changing models on their production line and getting new diesels for cheap as a Class 3 railroad were not something EMD salesmen were known to deliver.

A young salesman from EMD did notice that there were two NW2's that had been produced but not delivered to a Class 1 railroad. Those units were stored on a side track near the La Grange plant and they were slowly rusting out. He offered the WWSL a fire sale price for the two units and threw in an offer to paint out the original railroad's lettering and logo before delivery. The deal was made. The WWSL used their new NW2s as road switchers on the 2nd Division.

Sometime after delivery, an accident involving a pole load shifting and impaling one of the NW2s through the front intake. The WWSL modified the front ends of both units with steel posts and a full sized grill (similar to the SW7) for protection and improved air flow.

Engineering

The Phase V NW2 is characterized by the straight hood to cab transition and the smaller NW2 opening.

Modeling Information.

I am going to model the WWSL NW2s using the Athearn Blue Box SW7.
