8.6.6 Union Pacific EMD GP7 No. 112

 Prototype Information

The NP, MILW and UP introduced diesel locomotives to Gray's Harbor operations after WWII. Specific assignments of Union Pacific units is schetchy. Based on a February 2000 Yahoo Group text, James Fredricson, a dispatcher for the NP, reported that on Friday August 21, 1959, UP 112 (a GP7) was in service between Aberdeen and Hoquiam.

Built as UP 700-729; renumbered to UP 100-129 during October and November 1953 at Salt Lake, Las Vegas, or Los Angeles while in service on the South-Central District, working on the Utah and California Divisions.

I am going to have a static model of UP GP7 No.112. I have purchased a Life Like Proto 2000 GP7 Body Shell Union Pacific UP 102 and will add details as appropriate. Running gear will come from an Athearn GP9 (actually a GP7), modified as appropriate.

Engineering Information

1500 horsepower; B-B trucks; operating weight: (see general note, below)

Union Pacific's GP7s were operated long hood forward. The GP7s had 24-inch exhaust stack extensions, low mounted headlights, emergency warning "Mars" lights, and an unusual number board arrangement on the long, forward hood (15 inches below the standard position on the beveled ends). The regular headlights were also mounted in line with the number boards, below the Mars light, 15 inches lower than the EMD standard.

The first order of UP's GP7s, 700-709 (renumbered to 100-109) had high number boards when delivered and the other 20 units were delivered with low number boards.

UP 100-109 had one high door, while 110-129 had all-low doors. UP 105-109 were built in March 1953 on the cusp of the change in door configuration.

UP 100-127 were equipped with 1600 gallon fuel tanks.

UP 100-119 were equipped with 16-567B engines; UP 120-129 were equipped with 16-567BC engines.

UP 100-127 had 249,200 pounds operating weight

The exhaust stack extensions were 24 inches, with 6 inch high by 3 inch gussets at the base for strength.
