8.6.5 Milwaukee Road EMD SW1200 No. 1637

Prototype Information

The EMD SW1200 was a 4 axle diesel switcher locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1954 and May 1966. The SW1200 was the third model of 1,200 hp SW series switchers built by EMD. It was a successor to the SW7 and SW9. Those locomotives used which used EMD 567B 12-cylinder engine which generates 1,200 horsepower (890 kW), the SW120 used the 567C engine. 737 examples of this locomotive model were built for U.S. railroads.

Milw 614 at Hoquiam

The  MILW introduced diesel locomotives to Gray's Harbor operations after WWII. Based on a February 2000 Yahoo Group text, James Fredricson, a dispatcher for the NP, reported that on Friday August 21, 1959, the Milwaukee Road had MILW 614 (a SW1200) located at Hoquiam for switcher service.

The first batch of units was built in January 1954 and numbered 1637 to 1642. The remaining diesels, 2020 through 2061 (no. 638 started life as no. 2033), were built in November 1954. All of the 1,200-hp locomotives were renumbered into the 600 series in 1959.

1637 was 614's original number.
