2.1.5 Air Brake Testing

 Prototype Information

Initial Brake Test: to be performed when any crew takes control of a new train or if the train line has been significantly modified. 

  • Set brakes. Hold pressure for 1 minute. Confirm pressure at the end of the train line.
  • Visually inspect all brakes for application.
  • Release Brakes. Visually inspect all brakes for release.

Intermediate Brake Test: to be performed enroute when cars are added to or removed from the train line.

  • Fully Charge the train line. (3 seconds per car.) Indicate the number of new cars added. 
  • Set brakes and hold pressure for 1 minute.
  • Confirm pressure at the end of the train line.
  • Visually inspect brakes on newly added cars for application.
  • Release brakes.
  • Visually inspect brakes on newly added cars for release.

Continuity Test: to be performed if the train line has been uncoupled and re-coupled but no other changes have been made. IE: breaking a train over a crossing or changing out motive power.

  • Confirm pressure at the end of the train line.
