Prototype Information
The Yardmaster is responsible for managing all operations within designated yard limits.
The following is an excerpt from the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad Company Consolidated Code of Operating Rules and General Instructions.-Revised 1946. as it applied to the Yardmaster.
840. At stations where a yardmaster is employed, the general direction and government of the yard is in his charge, and all persons employed in yard service must obey his instructions.
Yardmasters must see that cars are carefully handled and no unnecessary noise made by engines or employes, giving particular attention to the work in connection with or near sleeping cars in service and see that the occupants are not unnecessarily disturbed.
841.. Yardmasters are responsible for the proper make-up and movement of trains through yards, the prompt handling of cars and the requirements as to the diversion, refrigeration, ventilation and
heating, and for the proper position and security of all yard switches.
The WWSL
The WWSL has two yards, the Demaine Yard located at Montesano Wa., and the Coal Grove Yard located at Coal Grove. The Yardmaster is only responsible for operations at the Demaine Yard.
- Coordinate with station agent for determination of inbound cars.
- At each yard, stock Train and Switch List Forms for crew use.
- Prepare the Yardmasters desk for operations.
- Conduct operations in accordance with the Yard Operations Manual.
- Notify the Dispatcher when trains are ready for crew call. Provide train symbol, total train length, tonnage, and lead engine number for all departing trains.
- Provide the outgoing crew with departing train information,consist, train list, car waybill and caboose cards.
