The WWSL
In the WWSL blog post Work Spaces I discussed the given and druthers for my modeling space. Here I am going to discuss the Tool Station specifics.
Given and Druthers
Tool Stations. A project always goes faster when you have the right tools and supplies at hand for the job. Some tools are more important than others at any given moment.
When I first started, workbench organization was everything not needed on the layout went on the bench. Tools were organized as one part of the workbench. Here is my first attempt as a work bench tool station. Organized it wasn't and it wasn't efficient either. But then I wasn't into scenery, locomotive, rolling stock or structure scratchbuilding or kitbatching either. I call it tool station vers 2.0 because it was better than tools scattered hapzardly on the workbench!
One
of the lessons learned from my internet search was the idea that tools
should be handy on the workbench for the specific project at hand. One
commentator suggested consolidating tools by task: knifes and files for
cut projects, glues for glue ups, soldering tools for soldering
activities, paints, brushes and cleaner for painting, weathering
products for weathering. I wish I could remember who he was so i could
tip my hat in appreciation for his setting me on the right path!
I've only built one tool station so far : its a measuring station. I've been wasting alot of time in trying to fine the three scale rules I know I have so this is an organized start. I already know I'm going to have to upgrade it to include other measuring devices I have on hand from my drafting days.
I also have a pretty good idea what the various stations I am going to need based on the new organizational philosophy. I'll update this page as I get them created and built.
In the meantime I DO have a location built for their storage !
