11.1.2 Project Tables

The WWSL

In the WWSL blog post Work Spaces I discussed the given and druthers for my modeling space. Here I am going to discuss the project table specifics.

Given and Druthers

I should have one or more tables available for larger project construction and assembly. Table should be height adjustable if possible. Table top and sides must be such that its easer to clamp tools and jigs for various projects.

Project Tables

Some projects are too large to work or assemble on the main workbench. The WWSL has at least four buildings that will need space larger than the main workbench.

1) O.K.Coal Mine (16 inches by 24 inches)

2) Satsop River Bridge (42 inches)

3) OPLC Sawmill (12 inches by 36 inches)

4) American Pulp and Paper has several buildings 36 to 48 inches or more in length.

In addition, the WWSL is sectional in nature, each section can be removed from the L-Girder benchwork. Rather than bringing in some saw horses (a reasonable possibility), a table would be great for right of way and scenery construction.

I was able to get two tables (one six foot and one eight foot long) from salvage to help the project activities. The tables are also easy to move to a needed location, and can be taken down and stored whenever necessary.

Project Table 1

Table #1 is used exclusively for large locomotive, rolling stock and structure projects. Building multiples of a particular project is best done on a large table - allowing elbow room for the build. The top is pressed wood, so if I need to anchor a tool or the project I can drill holes in the top as necessary.

This table is located parallel to the staircase, and adjoins the power tool storage area. If I need the sander, drill press or mini table saw they are right there to pull out and use on the table. The table has holes drilled in it already for a desk lamp for task lighting. I'm planning to add a 1" v 3" piece of dimensional lumber along one long edge so I can more effectively use bar clamps. The table has a power strip along the tool storage area for easier use.

Project Table 2

Table 2 is exclusively for right of way activities.  After laying out the right of way, its easier to move the section from the L-Girder benchwork to the table. I can then position the section in any direction. Creating landforms, wiring track etc is so much easier when you can flip or tilt the section as necessary - 360 degree access and no sore neck! Its plastic top is easy to drill into if necessary and wont react to liquids.
